Guatamala
Sailfish Heaven |
Superb
Fishing
Guatemala
is rated by Saltwater Sportsman magazine as the first choice
for Pacific sailfish every month of the year ! No destination
has more sailfish than Guatemala with less fishing pressure...year
round offering probably the best chance anywhere to target
sailfish on the fly.
Excellent Accommodation
Our new
adventure complex is right on the beach overlooking the Pacific
Ocean. It is the ideal environment to rest and relax after
a productive day of fishing. In addition, the new facility
provides the right atmosphere for a non-fishing partners and
families. |
|
Experience
Our
crews are among the most experienced in Guatemala and experts
at both conventional and fly fishing.
Service
Sailfish
Bay is owned and operated by experienced anglers. From start
to finish, we provide the knowledge and details for a great
fishing trip.
Catching Sailfish is Virtually Guaranteed!
Guatemala
fishing has gained an international reputation as having
one of the highest concentrations of billfish, in particular
Pacific Sailfish - year round.
Guatemala holds both the conventional and fly fishing records
with most sailfish released in one day. Sailfish Bay Lodge
has an unbelievable 134 sailfish released on conventional
(2 anglers - John & Ben Gist) over a 3-day period in
January 2004 and our fly-fishing record for one day is 22
releases (2 anglers - Michael Barnett & James Yates)
on February 14, 2004.
Guatemala's Pacific Coast is Literally Sailfish Heaven!
The
coast here in Guatemala forms a giant bay. Strong currents
coming west to east from the Mexican coast turn back after
hitting the coast of El Salvador and create an enormous,
natural occurring eddy, rich in bait and pelagic fish where
billfish and many other sport fishing species are found
in great numbers. Your trip will provide memories for a
lifetime.
In addition
to the always abundant sailfish population, you can also
target Dorado, Tuna, Blue and Black marlin. At certain
times, our inshore fishing offers shots at Roosterfish and
Jack Crevalle.

Fishing
pressure? What fishing pressure?
The sport
fishing fleet here is small and it's a rarity to see another
boat while fishing offshore. You usually have Guatemala's
calm ocean to yourself.
Scientists who have studied the large numbers of sailfish
off the coast of Guatemala have concluded this might be the
largest breeding ground for Pacific Sailfish in the world.
While we call our prime season November thru May, Sailfish
are caught year round in Guatemala. Since we've been in business,
not one of our clients has failed to release a sailfish! We
have an amazing fishery. We protect it by practicing catch
and release and using circle hooks. |

Our
Boats
Our
company boats are twin 32 ft Blackfins named "Maverick"
and "Gypsy". We feature Penn Gold reels, Star and
Outer Banks rods. For fly fishing we have Abel, Winston &
Diamondback fly rods. Our fly reels are either Abel, Diamondback,
or the Billy Pate "Marlin" reels. Lightweight conventional
tackle is available onboard as well. |
"Maverick"
and "Gypsy" are equipped with GPS and radio. Because
the fishing community is small and friendly, captains in
Guatemala regularly talk with each other during the day
ensuring all clients have the best fishing available. Our
captain and mates have been sport fishing in Guatemala for
15 years. They are considered among the best in Guatemala
and are experts at both conventional and fly fishing. Capt
Tito and Captain Pia are also skilled at hooking up marlin.
"Maverick" and "Gypsy" are always rigged
for marlin.
Depending upon water conditions, fishing can be as close
as 8 miles and up to 50 miles from shore.
Our boats are stocked with bottled water, sodas, beer, fresh
fruit. Lunch is provided onboard. We serve hamburgers, chicken
breast sandwiches and will be happy to prepare any fresh
caught dorado or tuna.
Circle
Hooks and Catch and Release
By
law, Guatemala is the first country to mandate the use of
circle hooks while billfishing and all billfish are catch
and release. We support both laws. Guatemala has proven
to the fishing community the hook up rate using circle hooks
is superior to J hooks and does not cause internal damage
to the fish. Our crew will be happy to teach the hook up
technique using the circle hooks.

Guatemala
Fly Fishing -
If you've ever dreamed of catching a 100 lb sailfish on fly,
it's time to discover Guatemala sport fishing! With our year-round
abundant sailfish population, you will have more opportunities
for hook-ups than anywhere in the world. Our experienced captains
and mates can help the knowledgeable or teach the novice the
art of fly fishing for billfish. You may also have the opportunity
for Dorado on fly, a great fighter and challenge to your angling
skills.

Fly Fishing Equipment - We
carry Abel, Winston and Diamondback fly rods. They range in
size from 12 - 14 weights. Our reels consist of Abel, Diamondback
and the Billy Pate "Marlin". We recommend Cam Sigler's
"Pink Squid" tube fly and our most successful colour
is pink and white. If rigging them yourself, 6/0 "J"
hooks are preferred. When sailfish are less aggressive on
the surface, we suggest a partially sinking streamer style
fly, pink and white with the same size hook. |
We
use two types of fly line:
If you
don't want to purchase fly equipment we rent our equipment
for $30 pp per day including flies.
Fly Fishing Instruction - Sailfish
Bay's captains and mates are among Guatemala's finest for
fly fishing. Loaded with experience our crews know how to
rig rods/reels, tie flies and tease sailfish close to the
boat. Lodge owner Robert Fallon will work closely with those
clients needing extra help on fly fishing. He can teach you
the correct hook-up procedure for billfish and we don't charge
extra for this service. So far our
fly fishing clients have had a 100% success rate catching
sailfish on the fly!
