Mahseer Magic

The Ultimate fishing adventure in India

As the Cauvery River flows out of the Western Ghats (hills) to the Tamil Nadu plains, it cuts deep gorges and creates huge rapids. It's the perfect environment for huge mahseer. Starting at Mekhedaatu - the Goat's Leap - and down through the Ajibora Rapids are many pools and holding areas. Although only lightly fished, many large mahseer have been caught in these stretches.

The Nawabza {Local Prince} himself has a fish of 107lb to his name. Andy Bright has caught 104lb and 86lb on the same morning!

There is still a part of the stretch that has been totally unfinished and is a completely unknown quantity. On a coracle ride down here last year it just oozed potential.

Jeeps are available to take you to the upper and lower sections, and coracles are on hand to cross the river and help with the landing of fish.

There is normally at least one local guide for every two visitors. Suhban, the head guide (and some say river god!) is in charge, and even the most experienced of anglers welcome his help and opinion. Two main sections are fished every day. The morning lasts from first light until midday and then again from 4 o'clock until nightfall. The afternoons are just too hot to be out in, a strange sensation to those used to the British winter.
Bait is provided. Ragi paste, freshwater crabs and livebaits are the main ones used. It is always worth carrying a plug or spinners if you can.

There is always a pre-trip get together to look at fishing in depth and to get a feel for it.

THE CAMP

Constructed from local materials, the camp is set on a sandy beach right by the riverside. Each twin bedded unit has its own shower area and toilet area. Although very basic, it is comfortable and all linen is provided.

Meals are taken at the central dining area. The traditional Indian country cooking is to a high standard and is freshly prepared every meal. All meals are included in the price of the trip. Cold drinks are available to purchase. Staff make trips most days to collect ice for the beer - there is nothing better after a hot session on the river.

Camp staff are happy to look after your needs. Anything from clothes washing to a haircut and massage are possible.

You will always see plenty of wildlife. Fabulous birds, hosts of monkeys and deer. Wild elephants are spotted as well, and the odd crocodile can be seen in the distance.

Be sure to take a camera and perhaps binoculars. You never know quite what you might see.

All our departures are during the best part of the season for this river.
